Are Catalogs the Right Solution?

Effectively supporting indexed operations in a software ecosystem
The use of ZCatalogs in the Plone ecosystem has been the site of many nightmares. To be clear, it's not that ZCatalog is broken, it does what it tries to do fairly well. I think a software ecosystem that relies on an open community of developers to use ZCatalog in a scalable fashion is broken.
